Gary Henderson

Gary Henderson, 1999 International Bluegrass Music Association “Broadcast Personality of the Year”, has been producing bluegrass gospel music on the “Bluegrass Special” at WTRM-FM since September, 2007. In all of his broadcasting duties, this gospel program is his favorite!

Text Box: For 42 years, Gary has been producing bluegrass programs at WAMU-FM, at the American University, in Washington, D. C. He can be heard on 88.5 H. D. Channel Two, at 105-5 FM from Reston, Virginia and on the Internet at www.bluegrasscountry.org with his “live” bluegrass show every Saturday morning at 8am.

Gary began his commercial radio work in 1962 with WFMD in Frederick, Maryland. From there, he joined the Everett Dillard family, owners of WDON-AM/WASH-FM, playing country music. The Dillards, however, fired him for playing too much bluegrass music on-the-air, a distinction he today wears with pride.

He also worked at the “Big-K”, a commercial country station WKCW in Warrenton, Virginia and at WHFS in Bethesda, Maryland. He has been collecting bluegrass and country records since 1953, inspired by his radio mentor, the late Don Owens — a nationally known and respected country and bluegrass disc jockey of WARL-AM 780 in Arlington, Virginia.
